Every Nigerian learner could soon have a permanent academic identity!
The Federal Government has introduced the National Learner Identification Number (LIN) as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s education system and improve how students are identified and tracked throughout their academic journey.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the LIN is designed to give each learner a unique and permanent education identity, allowing academic records to remain connected even when a student changes schools or relocates to another state.
What is the LIN?
The Learner Identification Number will serve as a unique identifier for students within Nigeria’s education system. It is being implemented under the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) initiative.
The system is expected to help government and education authorities:
✅ Track students’ academic progression
✅ Improve education planning and resource allocation
✅ Identify students who drop out of school
✅ Strengthen examination verification
✅ Reduce impersonation and examination malpractice
✅ Improve identification of out-of-school children
✅ Maintain students’ educational records when they transfer between schools
The government says more than 1.9 million candidates sitting for the 2026 WAEC and NECO examinations had already been issued LINs during the initial rollout.
The initiative is expected to eventually cover learners across public and private schools nationwide.
What Does This Mean for Students?
In the future, students could have one recognised education identity that follows them from one stage of their education to another — from basic education through higher levels.
The government also expects the system to help tackle the problem of so-called “miracle centres” and improve the integrity of examinations by making it easier to verify learners and their academic records.
