There are different channels retail investors can access the Nigerian capital market.
For this Dangote Refinery IPO, several channels have been authorized
For simplicity, let’s group them into:
PRIMARY CHANNELS
Stockbrokers such as Afrinvest and their sub-brokers/platforms.
SECONDARY CHANNELS
Fintech platforms and bank portals such as PiggyVest, Paga and participating banks.
Now, why am I specifically warning you to be careful with bank portals?
To subscribe to an IPO
You need a CSCS account and CHN
Your CSCS account is essentially where your shares are held electronically
Your CHN (Clearing House Number) is your unique identifier in the Nigerian capital market.
When you use a stockbroker directly, these details are established as part of your onboarding.
But when a first-time investor goes through a bank portal, things can become complicated
You will be asked to create a CSCS account and CHN, choose a stockbroker, or be assigned/matched to one as part of the process
And this is where the problem can start
The new investor may not understand which stockbroker ultimately "holds" their shares
Months later, they want to access or sell the shares and they start wondering:
“Who is my stockbroker?”
Even worse, there are situations where an investor knows the broker but the allotted shares don't appear in the brokerage account for one reason or the other
I have personally been involved in cases where investors had to go through several rounds of communication between the Registrar and Stockbroker before their shares were eventually reflected.
Why go through this headache when it can be avoided?
This is why my most preferred channel is the PRIMARY CHANNEL, particularly through the broker's own investment app.
Open an account
Complete your KYC
Get your CSCS and CHN
Subscribe to the Dangote Refinery IPO
Then, whenever allotment happens, your shares reflect on your brokerage app
The same app you used to subscribe to the IPO
No waking up months later wondering:
“Where are my Dangote Refinery shares?”
No trying to figure out which broker you were assigned to
No unnecessary emails between you, the registrar and a stockbroker you barely know.
So don't just think about how to buy Dangote Refinery IPO today
Think about how you will access, monitor and manage the shares after the IPO.
That's the reason for my warning
