The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulating Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the minister highlighted Nigeria’s diversity, hospitality, human resources and natural resources as key assets capable of driving national development.
Tunji-Ojo also emphasised the importance of peace, unity and stability, describing them as essential to the progress of any nation.

The minister urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the patriotism of the country’s founding fathers and contribute towards building a nation that future generations can be proud of.

He also paid tribute to Nigeria’s past heroes, while calling on citizens to continue upholding the values of patriotism and national unity.
