The Federal Government has announced a new initiative that will give eligible Nigerian students 100MB of free data every day to access approved educational websites and digital learning platforms.
The programme is set to begin October 1, 2026, and will initially cover students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development in Abuja during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria.
According to the minister, the free data will be provided through participating mobile network operators and can be used to access approved educational websites and platforms.
🎓 Who Will Benefit?
The first phase will focus on:
🏫 Public senior secondary school students
🎓 Students in public tertiary institutions
The government plans to extend the initiative to other categories of learners later.
📱 What Can the 100MB Be Used For?
The daily allowance will provide zero-rated access to approved platforms such as:
* Digital libraries
* Learning management systems
* Educational repositories
* Teacher development platforms
* Technical and vocational training platforms
The Federal Ministry of Education and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will jointly determine which platforms qualify for the programme.
Why Is FG Doing This?
The government says the cost of internet data remains a major barrier preventing many Nigerian students, particularly those from low-income households, from accessing online educational resources.
The goal is to ensure that no Nigerian learner is locked out of digital education simply because they cannot afford data.
The NCC said major network operators, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria and Globacom, are supporting the rollout.
The initiative will also operate within existing rules covering cybersecurity, child protection, data protection, consumer protection and net neutrality.
👀 But There’s Another Big Announcement…
The Minister of Education also revealed that the government is working on measures to regulate internet access for children below 16 years old.
Further details on the proposed regulation are expected to be announced.
