FG Launches Tinubu Light Initiative to Power 1 Million MSMEs with Clean Energy
The Federal Government has launched the Tinubu Light Initiative, a nationwide renewable energy programme aimed at providing affordable and reliable clean electricity to one million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.
The initiative was unveiled by the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) at the National Showcase of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 in Abuja.
The programme is designed to help MSMEs reduce the high cost of electricity and their reliance on petrol and diesel generators through innovative financing models and strategic partnerships.
According to the Director-General of NBTI, Dr Kazeem Raji, the initiative is expected to create more than 50,000 direct jobs, promote the adoption of renewable energy, support local manufacturing and improve the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses.
Raji said reducing the cost of energy would enable businesses to redirect savings into production and expansion, leading to higher productivity, increased employment and stronger economic growth, particularly for women and young entrepreneurs.
“Imagine one million businesses operating with lower production costs; entrepreneurs reinvesting their savings into business expansion; increased productivity across every sector of our economy; cleaner communities and stronger local industries,” he enthused.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the administration’s efforts to promote innovation, science, technology and entrepreneurship as drivers of sustainable economic development.
