You no longer need to stand in a long queue or visit a passport office to start your Nigerian passport application. You can do the entire process online from your phone.

Here is everything you need to know:

- Your National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory. The portal will not let you proceed without it.

- Also have your birth certificate, a recent passport photograph with a red background, and your previous passport data page if you are renewing.

How much it costs in 2026:

- 32-page passport (5-year validity): N100,000

- 64-page passport (10-year validity): N200,000

For Nigerians in the diaspora:

- 5-year passport: $150
- 10-year passport: $230

There is also a portal registration fee of N1,000 to N2,000 paid before you begin. This is non-refundable.

Step by step guide:

- Step 1: Go to passport. immigration. gov. ng on your Chrome browser. You can also download the NIS Mobile app from Google Play Store or the App Store.

- Step 2: Create an account with your email address and set a password. Verify your email before proceeding.

- Step 3: Fill in your personal details accurately. Your name must match your NIN exactly. Any mismatch will cause delays.

- Step 4: Upload your passport photograph with a red background taken within the last 6 months.

- Step 5: Select your preferred passport office for biometric capture and book an appointment date.

- Step 6: Make payment through the portal using your debit card or bank transfer. Do not pay anyone outside the portal. Touts offering to speed up the process for a fee are fraudsters.

- Step 7: Attend your biometric appointment on the date you selected. Bring all your original documents. If you are eligible for contactless biometrics through the NIS Mobile app, you can complete this step without visiting the office.

- Step 8: Track your passport status on the portal. Processing typically takes 6 to 8 weeks depending on your location and the volume of applications at your passport office.

Important warnings:

You don't have to use agents or touts. The entire process is self-service and online.

Do not submit mismatched documents. Your name on every document must be consistent.
